Euro Pallets Explained: Why Spectrum 3PL Uses Them to Optimise Your Inventory Management

At Spectrum 3PL, efficiency and consistency are cornerstones of our operations. One way we ensure this is by using Euro pallets as our standard pallet type in our warehouses. But what exactly is a Euro pallet, and why does it matter for your inventory management? Let’s explore the details.

What Is a Euro Pallet?

The Euro pallet, also known as the EURO-pallet or EPAL pallet, is a standardised wooden pallet widely used across Europe. Its standardised dimensions and load capacities make it a reliable choice for logistics, storage, and transport.

Here are the key specifications:

  • Dimensions: 1200 mm x 800 mm
  • Height Restriction: 1.23 metres (1230 mm) per pallet load
  • Weight Capacity: 650 kg per pallet load
  • Material: Typically made of durable wood, with strict manufacturing and repair standards set by the European Pallet Association (EPAL).

How Many Boxes Can Fit on a Euro Pallet?

The number of boxes that can fit on a Euro pallet depends on the size and dimensions of your boxes. Here’s how you can calculate it:

  1. Divide the pallet’s surface area (1200 mm x 800 mm) by the footprint of a single box.
  2. Consider the height of the boxes to ensure the load doesn’t exceed the 1.23-meter height restriction (including pallet height).
  3. Make sure the total weight of the boxes stays within the 650 kg limit.

For example: If your box measures 400 mm x 400 mm and weighs 10 kg, you could fit approximately 6 boxes per layer (2 rows of 3 boxes). Stacking 3 layers high (within the 1.23-meter height limit) would give you 18 boxes per pallet. Don’t forget to consider the height of the pallet itself.

Important Note: Each business has different needs and requirements for storage depending on their SKU restrictions. This example is for illustration purposes only. Spectrum’s team will carefully consider all variables and requirements on a case-by-case basis to ensure your inventory is handled and stocked correctly.

Why Does Spectrum 3PL Use Euro Pallets?

We have standardised Euro pallets in our warehouse for the following reasons:

  • Global Compatibility: Euro pallets are recognized and widely used across Europe and beyond.
  • Efficient Use of Space: Their compact size is ideal for maximising space in trucks and warehouses.
  • Compliance: Many European supply chains require goods to be transported on Euro pallets.
  • Durability and Quality: EPAL-certified Euro pallets are built to stringent standards, ensuring safety and reliability.

What if I Need a Different Pallet Size?

We understand that businesses may have specific requirements, and our team is always ready to discuss and accommodate other pallet sizes as needed. Whether it’s providing tailored quotations or deciding the best stock rotation strategy, our experts will ensure that your logistics are optimised. Rest assured, Spectrum 3PL will handle your inventory management in the most cost-effective way possible.

How Do Euro Pallets Compare to Other Pallet Types?

UK Standard Pallets:

  • Dimensions: 1200 mm x 1000 mm
  • Load Capacity: Up to 1000 kg (varies by type). No more than 725kg as per our racking Safe Working Load, or else has to be kept on the floor.
  • Use: Common in the UK but less space-efficient in European trucks.
  • Comparison: UK pallets offer more surface area but are bulkier, making them less suitable for international supply chains compared to Euro pallets.

North American Pallets (Standard GMA):

  • Dimensions: 48 inches x 40 inches (1219 mm x 1016 mm)
  • Load Capacity: Varies, often up to 1000 kg. No more than 725kg as per our racking Safe Working Load, or else has to be kept on the floor.
  • Use: Standard in North America but less compatible with European racking systems.
  • Comparison: While GMA pallets are great for the U.S. market, they’re not ideal for European or global logistics due to dimensional differences.

ISO Pallets:

  • Dimensions: Various sizes, including 1200 mm x 1000 mm (similar to UK pallets)
  • Load Capacity: Varies
  • Use: Aimed at global compatibility but less commonly adopted in Europe.
  • Comparison: Euro pallets remain the most practical for European logistics systems.
